New Zealand's Contact Energy has announced plans to build a 100-megawatt (MW) grid-scale battery at Glenbrook, near Auckland, New Zealand, powered by Tesla Megapacks. This project is set to cost up to NZD$163 million (C$133 million) and is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026.
In South Auckland, Contact has a contract with Tesla to build the 100MW battery. The $163m grid-scale battery will be built in Glenbrook and will be the country's newest large-scale battery, the closest to the largest city, and Tesla's first Megapack 2 XL system in New Zealand.
In announcing the project, Contact Energy said they also had consent to operate and maintain a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at East Rd (State Highway 45) Stratford. The consent was granted in November 2022.
Stratford's power station could be next on the list to get a massive 100-megawatt battery project to store excess renewable energy. Yesterday, Contact Energy announced plans to build a $163 million 100MW battery station in south Auckland that would provide enough electricity to meet peak demand over winter for 44,000 homes for over two hours.
Vanadium flow batteries offer a high level of safety due to their non-flammable electrolyte. The vanadium electrolyte is chemically stable, reducing the risk of hazardous reactions. 4. Long Lifecycle Vanadium flow batteries can last 20 years or more with minimal degradation in performance.
While there are several materials being tested and deployed in redox flow batteries, vanadium remains the most reliable and scalable option for long-duration, large-scale energy storage. Here's why: 1. Proven Track Record Vanadium redox flow batteries have been deployed at commercial scales worldwide, offering a level of trust and reliability.
The reaction uses the half-reactions: Other useful properties of vanadium flow batteries are their fast response to changing loads and their overload capacities. They can achieve a response time of under half a millisecond for a 100% load change, and allow overloads of as much as 400% for 10 seconds.
Strength: Vanadium-based flow batteries are well-established and trusted within the energy storage industry, with multiple vendors providing reliable systems. These batteries perform consistently well, and larger-scale installations are becoming more common, demonstrating their ability to meet growing demands.
